Staying dry in the big wet

Emergency plastic sheets were distributed to families impacted by the recent severe wet season rains. When the monsoon rains pour, many people end up on the street with no roof over their head. The rain pours straight into their huts causing not just a terrible inconvenience but causing poor health, sleepless nights, fear and exhaustion. In the past some of the mums, were unable to breastfeed their babies due to their poor health and the wet uncomfortable conditions.

The plastic sheets this month were distributed to the slum families by our guest Mr. Dherandra Cauhan. We thank him for his kindness and help. The sheets cost $100AUS which we feel is a small price, for such an important need.

Help us put a smile on a child's face - May News

It's hot in India but thankfully some rain has finally arrived. 48 degrees most days has been unbearable but despite this, help, love and compassion continue to bless the lives of so many people because of the work of Kotdwara Help.

Each day our 170 children are educated and fed a meal. The kids are looking healthy and their smiles remind us about the difference that has been made in their lives and to their circumstances. Thank you for your financial support and for changing their lives - otherwise they would be begging and 'reg picking' - searching through putrid rubbish while fighting off pigs and mongrel dogs, looking for materials to recycle and sell. These children now share stories with us about their hopes and dreams for the future. Prior to this, they dreamt of very little. These children did not know of what they could dream for.

Our new centre is officially open, and the technology classes for girls aged 13+ have begun. A new learning centre has also commenced in one of the upstairs rooms, welcoming about 30 very poor primary aged children who live in the town. Many of these kids have heartbreaking stories, some of which we have started sharing on Instagram.

Our anti-trafficking work gathers momentum in the schools, villages and slums. Again, there have been some stunning stories of hope and rescue, found in the lives of the poorest of the poor in Kotdwara. Our dear friend and Director of Kotdwara Help, Amit Samuel, has written a letter of thanks to you all below. As you read, you will see just how busy he is. We are particularly excited about the respect and appreciation he is getting from the local police authorities.

Just this past month we have also; - built a shelter over the outdoor village classroom (see attached pic) - started a kids' soap project - helping and counselling individual people with health and medical issues

We cannot tell you enough how significant your donations are. You a part of the story of people's lives. If you can donate, remember that just $5 a week, the price of a coffee here in Sydney, provides a healthy meal and an education for a child who otherwise would be high risk to drugs, abuse and forced child labour. Please consider making a weekly direct debt donation of just $5 or more. Would you really miss this small amount?

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Love Doug and Rowena.

Amit's Report for the month of May is below, should you wish to read on....

*Dear Doug,Rowena and All dear Sponsors from AustraliaThis report is to share with you our activities done in the month of May 2016 and the plan of Action for coming months June, July, August and September. With the team of Anti Human Trafficking we visited schools with the aim of counselling students against Drug addiction and about human trafficking. We visited : 1.Slums center and nearby area on 15th May. 2. St. Joseph Convent School on 18th May. 3. J P Inter collage on 19th May. In the counselling session with children and youth near slums area we discovered some underlying facts. 1. Some elements are engaging small children in betting. 2. They are forcing them to steel from their homes. 3. They are supplying the small packets of drugs through the children within the city as children are not aware what they are carrying and police will not check children taking them innocent. Secondly we come to know about a family who had recently married their daughters 2 girls of age 14 & 13 years. Marriage below 18 years is a criminal offence in India as per government law. The family has an excuse that they are so poor, that they don't even have enough to feed and cloth the girls so they married them for good fecility. But the underlying fact is that they had actually sold their daughters. They had accepted some amount of money and not to be accused of selling girls, they performed the ritual of Marriage to be fool people and police. Now we and Anti Human Trafficking unit is behind this case and we will keep record of those those girls. When we condected counselling session and brought this case into light higher official got impressed of our work. They asked us to help them fight the problem of Drugs specially Smack which has spread noticeable in the recent year. The problem has many faces : 1. Youth and teenagers are affected. 2. Boys are indulging girls into it. 3. Boys are spoiling girls sexually after drug use.So we had chalked out a plan of Action to be executed in the coming month and it is as follows : 1. Meeting with all police officials of the area and discussing solutions for the problems. This meeting will be with Additional Superintendent of police Ms. SARITA DHOBHAL and others. In this meeting complete plan of action will be discussed and roles will be assignedWe had preformed our ideas and they will suggest them.We Planned Activities:1. Awareness Rally with police and students.2. Distribution of Pamphlets.3. Counselling with involved children and youth.4. Activities like Drawing Competition, Essay writing, Articles written, Poem writing, Dram, Dance, Singing, will be condected in the town with the help of Project Help team to direct interest of teenagers towards positive and constructive activities.5. Annual function of Project help organisations to be held in September when You and other member visit India. (Kids are very happy about this programme )These activities we have some miscellaneous experience Like; Convene, Printing work, Refreshments and one Time dinner with officials in a month, Annual function etc.I hope that you will understand the situation and would possibly by your best to help us more.God bless you allLove* Amit

Lives changed through our busy new centre.

*Dear brother Doug and all the loving partners from Australia. We all extend our heartiest thanks for your prayers and support. It is because of your prayers and Finencial support of each month. Now 170 poor and needy children is blessed your support through our projects in different ways. They are getting (1) Proper food, (2) Education, (3) Health care. Belive us all these children were rag pickers, engaged in child labour, Bagging, and we're from such a poor and secluded community that they had no hope. But with our combined effort, now they have every hope for a purposeful and meaningful life.PART - A..... You are will be so happy to know that we were able to hire a 3 rooms house for the purpose of office, New center of poor children, computer class for poor girls, sowing train center, rescue kids and girls by the police from th treffikers, meetings etc. From this month we need 5000 rupee per month for its rent.We are planning to open a computer training center for poor girls above 13 years from April 2016. This vision in our 5 year planning for this year. We are starting our new center for poor kids from 1st April 2016 and we had already registered 30 children. Most of these children are orphans or having single parent and their relatives are look after them in very bad conditon. Most of the kids are not able to go to the school so we have planned to start the center after a survey. We found that some of the children are suffering from various kind of diseases and are unable to treat as medicines. We will be focusing on (1) skill development (2) Health care of these children with your support. WE WILL BE IN NEED OF FOLLOWING : 1: Teacher for this new center - 2500/- ($25 Australian a month)2: Six chair three table - 5000/- ($10)3: Three fans - 4500/- ($9)4: Mats and stationary - 3000/- ($6)*

*PART - B.....Dear one's this 3 rooms building will serve us as our CENTRAL OFFICE.We are planning to run a computer Center too from this month for poor girls of 13 years and above from poor and secluded community's. For this purpose we will be in need of some computers and other equipments as per need..In our area position and conditions of girls is not at all good. They face a lot of problems. Parent from poor family do not educate girl child and due to illiteracy they take girls as a burden on them and their families. This gives rise to many socially evils. (1) Child Marriage (2) Child Labour (3) Girls treffikin . Even some parents are sell their girl child for money and throwing them into the hell of prostitution in our area. The helth condition also not good in our town area Like (1) Malnutrition (2) Anaemia (3) osteoporosis (4) Depression (5) Drug Addiction. We are working for such girls and women who are not able to take good education and training. More Over some girls who are engaged forcealy in to prostitution. So we need your prayer and Finencial support to empower this section of poor girls to develop a skill to earn their living hood and stand on their own. We request you all to visit our work in India with our brother Doug. Your regular support had brought a change in lives of many and will bring hope and change many more. You all are standing for a noble couse and God recognise it. God will return many folds to you as you are helping God's unfortunate children. We also pray for each one of you and your family. May God bless you all with his divine grace and heppiness. May you all lead a life of fulfilment and satisfaction. Please continue to think and support this work in India. Your Sincerely Amit & DaisySamuel............*

Tigers, A Pop Up Medical Centre and a Community Award

February was a big month for our charity in Kotdwara, especially for our friends Amit and Daisy Samuel and their team.

A tiger recently ran from the jungle and through the streets of Kotdwara exciting the locals. The video is pretty cool! It really is wild and primitive where we work.

The most exciting news for this month, has been the opportunity of our work expanding further in the heart of Kotdwara town, by renting an upstairs apartment for just $25 a week. This building has a kitchen, toilets, and three large meeting rooms. In this space, Amit and Daisy have conducted social work and leadership meetings for young people and just last week, it became a pop-up medical centre. Amit organised his local doctor friends to donate their time to help suffering poor people. About 200 people received medical treatment and counselling in just one day. The new tailoring school is held in this apartment also.

We thank God for his provision of such a wonderful resource.

Another highlight this month included winning a local NGO award for recognition of religious leaders who provide social work to the community. It is so good that Amit and Daisy continue to earn the respect of local authorities.

Just in February, I was excited to receive updates about the following projects;

  • school visits as part of the anti- human trafficking project. This involves working in conjunction with the police and school principals. The work is going well. Sadly I learnt of a 12 year old local boy, Nasim, who has gone missing and the police fear for his safety. There is high probability that he may have been trafficked, never to be seen again. We help the local police in their work to find missing children.
  • training and involvement in a womens empowerment program
  • visiting needy people in hospital and helping street people, beggars and others who are poor and suffering badly.

Our Teaching team work hard but they are also very poor. Because of your generous support we gave each of our teachers a gift of a mosquito net and new towels. These were gratefully received. Our teachers work with close to 150 children, 6 days a week.

Each week I receive emails with photos and updates about the projects they are involved in.  If you would like to know more about any of these projects, or see some photos of the people involved, please let me know. It would be my pleasure to tell you more.

Immediate Growth Goals

1. Amit and Daisy are both starting to find the growth and momentum of their work stressful. I am going to send them some money just to give them an opportunity to have a nice meal out and to enjoy a day trip, something they really love to do.

2. Admin support worker - 2.5 days a week

3. Christian Youth Worker/ Sports Coach for slum and Village teens and kids - 2.5 days a week.

$750 will pay for the annual salary of the above positions.

4. Construction of shade and rain shelter over our outdoor classrooms. $1000 will essentially pay for all four centres.

5. In my spare time I am still working on the website and a better way to post my monthly newsletters.

Please pray for these things and spread the word of all we are doing and hoping to achieve. If you are able to make a donation, your generosity makes a significant difference and goes a very long way in India. Please spread the word... just $5 a week adds up to help people.
